Gramps

Went to see Gramps, my mom's step-dad. My sister, her friend Krissy, Amy and I planned to visit him in his new digs, but we learned he'd been checked into the hospital that morning. He's been in failing health the last few years, and this stint in the hospital could be problematic. Although he's alert and carries on conversations easily (well, when he can hear them, that is), he is extremely frail.

Boyz Nite tonight. Lots of fun, though somewhat more tame than in years past. Probably a result of the aging of the Boyz :)

Another Puny Salad

For the second time in recent days, I am disappointed with the size of a salad. Today, it's Cosi. I had their "Signature Salad," without the vinagrette, and it was small. And it was $6.50! Sheesh!

In other news, I started my new job today. Pretty good, as first days go. I'm not expected to solve all their problems by the end of the week, so life is good. Lots to learn, though...

One of the perks is that I get a great discount to Lifetime Fitness. Like, the employer picks up the initiation fee and half of the monthly fee! So, I'll be starting back at a gym tomorrow morning. It's been a while, so I'm looking forward to it.

I had actually weighed myself for a weight update today, but Blogger hasn't been responsive, and I forgot what the reading was. Oh, well, I'll try to remember to do it tomorrow.

Oh yeah... Doctor appointment went well this morning. It was kind of fun, actually. The nurse automagically set the scale to 200 before I stepped on it, and I knew full well that it wasn't going to be that much when it stepped on it :)

Busy Day (For a Sunday)

Busy day today. We tried out a local Methodist church this morning, which happened to be a very bad morning for them. Prayers are requested for the family of James, who took his own life yesterday and a youth retreat. After church, lunch, a trip to Pearle to get Amy's glasses fixed, then to AutoZone to get a new battery for my car. I learned how to change my car battery (hint: it's much easier to get the new one in than the old one out, go fig), then back to AutoZone with the old battery. Finished off with some more yard work. Whew!

First day of work tomorrow with the new company. Should be fun :) Preceeded by an appointment with my regular doctor.

I really think that restaurants need to think about the sizes of their "dinner salads." Thursday, Talking About Potatoes

Not much today.

Dunno if I remembered to mention this (and I'm too lazy to look at past posts), Amy and I received two of her grandfather's cast iron skillets. Now, some of you won't think that's all that interesting, but I like to cook, and well seasoned cast iron cookery just plain rocks. So, I'm trying to learn to cook my potato flip in the cast iron, rather than the TFal. It really shouldn't be that much of a problem, cast iron is pretty non-stick when it's well seasoned. The problem I'm having is that the sides are so much steeper, it's harder to get the flip to, well, flip correctly. I seriously goofed yesterday, breaking the thing into three pieces (but not spilling anything, thank-you-very-much), today was slightly more successful, with just a mushed end (it under-rotated). I figure that the next time I try it, it'll over-rotate, that'd be my luck.

For the record, "potato flip" is Amy's name for the meal. It's actually a potato rosti or roesti. We were watching a show on Food TV and saw a chef make the rosti recipe and I thought I'd try it. Generally, I don't use bacon (though it's very yummy with it), and I frequently leave out the mushrooms if I'm eating by myself. It's easy up til the actual flipping of the potato. That part was a little tense at first, until I got the hang of it. Now, I get to get the hang of it again.

Very expensive day today. I took the kitties in to the vet for their yearly checkup, and on the back, I discovered I had a flat tire. Well, the tires were 50K tires, and it had been 50K miles since I had them put on, so I had them all replaced. Plus an oil change. Plus scheduled maintenance. Yep, very expensive day...

Downtown Chicago

What a fun day! After a great day with our friends, Renee and Odell, we set off early-ish for downtown Chicago. I have to say one thing about Chicago, the train system ROCKS!!! We parked at a garage near O'Hare (which cost us $2 for 12 hours) and bought two all-day passes for the train/bus system ($5 each), and headed downtown. We tooled around in the area of Millennium Park much of the day, finding a few caches along the way. About mid-afternoon, we headed out to the near west suburbs to meet our friend, Heather (for those of you who came to the wedding, she was the singer). She works for Lyon & Healy as the coordinator for their recital hall. We got a tour of the plant, which was very cool. Amy and I took Heather out to a local pizza joint for dinner before heading out. We ended up in La Porte, IN for the night.

A Day With Renee and Odell

Beautiful day in suburban Chicago. We got LOTS of exercise today. We took Renee and Odell geocaching and got a few miles in, then went shopping and picked up a few more. My big souvenir is a new pair of boots, my old ones had a hole in them :)

All in all, we had a great day with Renee and Odell. It had been a long time since we'd been out (for Amy, it was their wedding three years ago, for me, it was a little longer). Hopefully it won't be so long the next time...

The End of a Job

Pretty good day for the last one at work. Boring morning, nice lunch with the team, said my goodbyes early.

Our friends, Jim and Elizabeth, are in town tonight, and we got a chance to catch up with them. They're from San Diego, and we're their youngest daughter's God parents. Jim and Elizabeth took a three week trip to Greece and Turkey, and left their kids with Elizabeth's mom in nearby Grove City. We hadn't seen the family as a whole in a while, so it was great to get a chance to catch up.
