*$#@ Starbucks

*$#@ Starbucks and their *$#@ stupid size names...

Since starting this little "exercise in the morning" thing, I've stopped every morning at the Starbucks a couple blocks from work for my morning cuppa. I always order the largest cup of whichever regular coffee floats my boat that morning. Said "largest cup" is called, inexplicably, "venti". Now, I've been ordering this for the past six months, so you'd think I'd have gotten it down by now, but this morning, I was thrown off my game. First, I was more tired than usual, and second, as I was getting ready to order, one of the employees handed a cup of something or another to a patron and proclaimed it as a "tall" whats-it. Which, of course, is their small. Unfortunately, to my sleep-sodden head, "tall" sounded big, so I ordered one. It wasn't until I got the wrong change back that I had realized my mistake. *$#@ Starbucks. I wish there was a Caribou on the way to work...

All of which reminds me that when I grow up, I'm going to own my own coffee shop. I'm not going to do the Starbucks fru-fru naming convention, no siree. I'm going to have size names that make sense:

  • 8 oz - "Wee"
  • 12 oz - "Little"
  • 16 oz - "Middlin'"
  • 20 oz - "Big"
  • 24 oz - "FRIGGIN' HUGE!!!"
Customers will get a discount if they pronounce any of the names with a fake Scottish accent.

None of which, of course, has anything to do with the purpose of this blog, so I'll shut up now :)

Cincinnati Wine Festival

Fun day today. I met up with my friends, Mike and Bill, and went to the Cincinnati Wine Festival. We found some pretty tasty wines while there, and tasted a few old favorites. I think my taste in wine is changing a little, because I found myself enjoying some of the more mellow reds. Normally, I like the Aussie reds that take your tongue, abuse it with 50 grit sandpaper, pour cigar ashes on it, then stick it in a food dehydrater. It remains to be seen whether this represents a step up in the world...

Check-In With McConnell - 3/15

Another milestone today. Today, being a McConnell update, I had my "official" weigh in. I'm always sure to wear the same things: undergarments, jeans, t-shirt, socks and shoes, no belt or other accoutrements. The very first time I weighed in in such a manner, I weighed 234. Today, I finally reached 199. Weight wise, today was a very good day :)

Binge Eating - Tom Style

I'm a stress eater. I think I've always been one. Probably part of the reason why I weighed as much as I did just six months ago. Well, lately, I've been feeling a whole lot of stress from my job situation. I'm starting to think that I'd have been better off if things had turned out differently. Anyway, since last Thursday, I've wanted to do nothing except eat. I'd done pretty well until today. Today, I just couldn't go any longer, and I decided to binge. However, being that it was lunch, I decided that I could binge smart. Come to think of it, my binging doesn't look much different than a normal Wednesday lunch, except a little more than usual. I figured, since the dieticians told me I could eat all the veggies I could stomach, I'd put that to the test.

Not-So Lazy Day

Shopping day today, though I don't think we actually bought a lot. Looking for a recumbent bike, for when my membership expires. Also looking for a new dehumidifier, ours is starting to get pretty loud.

Check-In With McConnell - 3/8

My check-in went well again today. I'm soooooo close to 200 at McConnell, I think it'll only be another week before I'm looking up at 200 instead of down.

In other news, today was a very bad day at work. Major layoffs, at least in my department. The QA group was gutted. Nine of 15 people lost their jobs. I was spared, but under very odd circumstances. My project ended a couple of months ago, and since then, I've been filling in here and there. Today, I was told that I will be taking over the responsibilities of one of the people let go. The person who left is an expert, and I've never before laid eyes on the project. I'm having a major case of survivor's guilt.

Doctor Appointment

Another 5 minutes, another $50. That's how long I spent talking to the doctor, and the amount of my copay. Hmmmm.... Where do I get a job making $10 PER MINUTE?!

However, he was very impressed with all the weight I've lost (35 lbs from what he weighed me at about 7 months ago), and my liver enzyme levels are within eyeshot of normal. He thinks that if I continue to lose a little weight, things will settle in the normal range, so I won't need to return to his office unless things take a turn for the worse. So, this whole exercise has been well worth the trouble.

Oof

I bumped up the intensity on my recumbent bike today and got carried away. My knees came out pretty well, but I was too wiped out to stay on the treadmill for long. I'll throttle way back tomorrow, and try again on Wednesday.
